It may be fitting that those close to your pet have the opportunity to say goodbye at this kind of burial with very little cost involved. It's impossible to explain his impact on the book but one might guess that, given the title, his contribution weighs heavily on most of the story. The children’s book that sets the plot in motion, and brings it full circle, is unique within the novel in that it addresses loss directly.

As adults, the loss of a pet is a very significant event in our lives and is something that we prefer to keep from our thoughts. A continent-hopping road trip through memory, grief, love and loss, Thomas Pletzinger's debut novel lives up to the hype as it is translated into English for the first time. It's a novel with 2 narrators - Dirk Svensson, a reclusive children's book author de jour living on Lake Lugano, and Daniel Mandelkern, who travels there to interview him for a newspaper assignment given to him by his wife/boss. He wonders what their relationship is, ponders his relationship with is wife, and just generally shuffles around the lake house for four days. Burial on your own property should be considered carefully and you should take care to avoid any electricity cables, gas pipes or water ways.Svensson is completely evasive, often leaving Daniel alone with Tulli, a visiting Finnish beauty from his past, and her young son. You might have an area of the garden where you can have a small ceremony and bury the pet and have a small stone with the beloved dogs name on it. It is in the present day story (dated titles), narrated by Daniel Mandelkern, that this manuscript is discovered.

Funeral for a Dog doesn't feel like a German book, Pletzinger claims – though he struggles to define what a "German" book might be. As the author pitches his adult novel overboard, I think of Hemingway’s missing manuscript left on the train by first wife, Hadley. The novel’s lesson for child and man, man and beast, is that loving often entails losing, and that is horrible, sickening and frightening. I can help you by creating a service which may include prayers or poetry, readings and even symbolic rituals (planting a tree, lighting a candle or installing a commemorative sculpture). The hook that kept me watching, even though the lengthy New York section was the idea of finding out what happened to Felix. Daniel finds himself increasingly in the role of a detective, going about his task by piecing together what he observes - what IS the relationship between Tuuli and Dirk?

Though a ménage-à-trois is at the heart of Pletzinger’s novel, and though one narrator repeatedly mentions the dried menstrual blood he is unable to wash off, this is not done for shock value and does not feel gratuitous.

Fortunately for Daniel, he arrives at the same time as Tuuli, who encourages him to join her the rest of the way. Mandelkern's time there also serves another purpose, as much of his story is reflection on his (obviously) complex relationship with his wife Elizabeth.

I find it very difficult to tell a story from the beginning to the end, in a seemingly old-fashioned way," he says. Sometimes, as a way to find some solace and closure or as a way to say goodbye in a more formal setting, you may think that a pet funeral is right for you. Bar owner Laura thinks that Felix's death was not an accident and suspects Conti, the boat builder; Daniel shares with Tuuli memories of his wife Elisabeth, culminated by the loss of their child and Daniel's depression; they become very close.Perhaps it is just too experimental for my taste but 110 pages into the book I found I didn't have the heart to keep reading. I am a great advocate of the great outdoors being beneficial for mindfulness and wellbeing and it’s my happy place.
