About this deal

I’m looking for a smooth, wet, sexy, high-gloss look for the finished surface of some paintings but didn’t want to go the polyurethane route. If I could I’d not use varnish, but since acrylics dry dull and darker, it makes the painting more vivid again to use a protective varnish. I noticed that one of their products also recommends using an under-coat, or “isolation” coat, of gloss medium prior to the final spirit-based varnish.

Choosing complementary oils, solvents, mediums, and varnishes for your oil painting is as unique as choosing a colour palette. For spirit-based varnish rinse thoroughly in mineral spirits, then wash as above; ensure the brush is totally dry before varnishing again. First, the painting should be allowed to dry for at least 48 hours before varnishing, in the case of thicker paint longer might be required, especially in humid conditions.BUT if you make sure all doors and windows are closed - also have a bucket of steamy water in the studio to add humidity - and apply fairly speedily with a large flat soft watercolour brush - you'll get an excellent result.

Due to postal restrictions on dangerous goods, we are unable to ship pressurised containers ( aerosols), outside of Mainland UK. Seal your acrylic work with a transparent, high gloss acrylic layer which is breathable, permanent and protects against UV damage. In case the varnish needs to be removed from a painting, Golden Varnishes recommends applying an “isolation coat” of acrylic medium (I use golden gloss glazing medium) to separate the painting from the varnish. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.Mediums and acrylic emulsion varnishes are virtually the same thing (from Liquitex exactly the same in some cases).

In addition to preserving artwork, and offering protection against dirt and dust, a varnish evens out the final appearance of the paint, ensuring a uniform finish. As a general principle though spraying finish is not always advisable anyway, as it’s unlikely to give total coverage if there is a lot of texture in your work. It is nicely glossy and dries very quickly, unlike some of the more traditional varnishes that I have read about.V.) light damage, resists discoloration, yellowing and fogging and allows for easy cleaning without fear of damaging the acrylic paint film. The picture should always be flat when varnishing by brush, never vertical or tilted, which can result in runs, pooling, sagging and other problems. The superhigh gloss finish is certainly impressive, but we think it’s probably more suited to propmakers than scenic artists, or for areas where durability is key.
