About this deal

Only When I Larf Another departure, this is a comedy following the adventures of three con artists, Silas, Bob and Liz and their shifting, larky relationships as they manage (or fail) to pull off large-scale stings in New York, London and the Middle East. Horse Under Water Perplexing plot which is initially about diving into a wrecked U-boat off the Portuguese coast for Nazi counterfeit money, then changes into the exposure of an illegal heroin manufacturing operation, then touches on a top secret technology which can change ice to water instantly (ie useful for firing missiles from submarines under Arctic ice) and finally turns out to be about a list – the Weiss List – of powerful British people who offered to help run a Nazi government when the Germans invaded, and who are now being blackmailed. The most appropriate source for a Harry Palmer comeback film would be Len Deighton’s second novel, Horse Under Water (1963) which, although it fell between The Ipcress File (1962) on the one side and Funeral in Berlin (1964) and Billion-Dollar Brain (1966) on the other, remains tantalisingly un-filmed at present. Worth remembering that, before his writing career took off, Deighton studied at Saint Martin’s School of Art, won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, worked as an illustrator in New York and as an art director in an advertising agency. He makes a trip down to Cardiff, to the FO Forensics Lab, and spends an evening with our drugs expert in his chilly Welsh home, being briefed on the drug world circa 1962, including the large amount of acetic acid generated as a by-product of heroin production.

This despite the fact that I could never quite bring myself to believe that a submersible weather buoy from 1945 would still be working when Harry Palmer and Petty Officer Edwards scoop it out of the sea at the end of the novel. The story starts off very strong, with our hero in Morocco setting up a deal that could see a government coup happening in Portugal, with him going back to London saying that financing will be required. The text also explains that the submerged buoy, or Horse, could be ‘summoned’ to the surface by the use of a special, Very Long-Wave radio system.Da Cunha is an ex-Nazi, but not directly involved: HK pays him protection money, and da Cunha borrows HK’s big pleasure boat whenever he wants to. Bound in red cloth-covered hard boards, gilt titles to the spine and decoration to the upper board in black and blind stamp; in the original dustwrapper which is clipped to the inside flap. A very good book without inscriptions in a very good clipped wrapper with some browning to the edges and some wear to the edges and tips and corners.

Spy Hook First of the second trilogy of Bernard Samson spy novels in which Bernie slowly uncovers what he thinks is a secret slush fund of millions run by his defector wife with Bret Rensaeller (thought to be dead, but who turns up recuperating in a California ranch). These machines look like winged torpedoes and they can travel very long distances without recourse to propellers. For example, a colleague who’s been helping out on the Portugal job gets into our man’s car at the London Airport car park to drive it over to him and the car explodes, killing this colleague, as our man watches.

It was to hide the existence of the Weiss List, not to cover the heroin smuggling that his car was blown up at Heathrow. ii] Len Deighton, “Why Does My Art Go Boom”, (subtitle ‘as the spy craze continues to spiral skyward, the author of “the ipcress file” files a personal report on the phenomenon’), Playboy (Chicago, May 1966), p. It is fascinating to consider how the Harry Palmer series might have continued had a new actor been cast for a film of Horse Under Water. Now I’ll have to re-read Horse Under Water to see how well my version of the Horse fits in with the action. vii] It is believed that the actor that producer Harry Saltzman had in mind to replace Michael Caine in the role of Harry Palmer was Nigel Davenport.

Although it is anchored to the sea bed the cable is long enough so that it can float with one circular end a out of the water, enough to get the radio aerial clear of the sea. It hadn't occurred to me that it was on the technological forefront, I had always thought that the "horse" was the heroin. In person: Being present at the auction provides the convenience of being able to remove the lots that you have purchased when the sale ends, provided you choose to pay by credit or debit card, guaranteed cheque or cash. When "Spy Story" was filmed in the 70s an undistinguished Michael Petrovitch played the lead role (named Patrick Armstrong, owing to Deighton's never naming the character in the books) which only emphasised how important Caine was to the series. The UK Government can not be seen to directly finance a counter government group, so a plan is made to salvage money that is thought to be inside a sunken German U-Boat off the Portugal coast. Suffice to say that with a succession of startling revelations linked by sharp dialogue, the book effortlessly acquires classic status. What raises Deighton's genre to art is not only his absorbing characters but his metaphoric grace, droll wit, command of technical detail, and sure sense of place.

It certainly had the potential for being the source for a successful film, as, for instance, the “whole of the first Penguin edition of Len Deighton’s Horse Under Water – over 60,000 books – sold out completely within 48 hours of publication. Against his better judgement the Narrator is seduced by her, whereupon she tips him off about HK’s heroin factory.Poor box office from Billion Dollar Brain the movie and not poor sales from Horse Under Water the book probably killed this project. He closed his eyes, gulped down his claret and leaned against the wall like a worn-out roll of line.
