About this deal

The handle stays pretty much where you leave it, making a quick set-it-down-to-close-the-back-hatch maneuver a cinch. And through it all we haven’t lost sight of our original goal—to create products that enable the pursuit of happiness (however you define it). If you just want a cooler that works and you don’t care about the bells and whistles, the BMX 25 is perfect.

Our only real complaint is that the rubber latches catch against your leg if you forget and carry it the wrong way around, which is easily solved by flipping the cooler 180 degrees. However, I struggled a few times getting the cooler open one-handed as the latches are fairly stiff. After hundreds of questions from my friends about the best gear, I figured thousands of guys must have the same problems finding the best cooler for their money. I ran several tests on the Igloo BMX 25 to test its ice retention, capacity, insulating power, and water-tightness. Again, the tests I ran don’t mimic how you’d likely use this cooler: opening, closing, putting on the hot sand, etc.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Suddenly, taking your kids camping on the weekend became easy and cross-country roadtrips became a summer vacation staple.

The Igloo also has tie-down holes in all four corners that will keep this little box securely fastened and closed until you untie it again. I haven’t compared these coolers against one another dropping them from any great heights, but it’s pretty clear that rotomolded coolers like YETI and RTIC are far more sturdy. Of course, you have more room to load this bad-boy down, with weight, but strictly speaking, it’s the easiest to move around. With a capacity of 23 liters and space for 36 cans, there is plenty of room for all your favorite treats. So while we love the thick, sturdy walls and robust feel of the BMX 25, there are some minor flaws in this cooler's durability.Overall, we found the Igloo insulation to be pretty good for its size and are quite impressed with its performance in our insulation tests. That’s why I picked up the Igloo BMX 25, the iconic brand’s budget-friendly small hard-sided cooler. It’s also ideal for the Friday night takeaway run, just load the Igloo up in the back of your car or van, put your bag of hot takeaway food in there, close the lid and drive, relaxed knowing the hot takeaway will still be hot when you get home, plus it keeps the takeaway food smell from sticking to your car furniture. We found that under torturous conditions, the BMX 25 can keep food below the FDA-approved temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit for four days.

Additionally, water easily spills out without a seal to hold it in — a negative for something that could tip over in the back seat around a tight bend. What began with bringing clean water to the worksite quickly moved into super-functional, best in class ice chests. We feel that Igloo may have missed an opportunity by not making these tie-down holes also lockable, which can add a measure of animal protection or peace of mind. The rotationally molded construction, extra-large hinges, reinforced bottom and corner protection ensure that this army green with black cooler can withstand the roughest conditions.

Despite having the largest capacity of the small hard-sided coolers I tested (25 quarts vs 24, 22, and 20), it’s the lightest when empty. The YETI does the best in this situation because of its nylon handle, and the RTIC does well because the stainless steel bar is recessed into the cooler so it doesn’t take up extra space at the sides. Engineered for durability and performance, the lightweight BMX can withstand harsh circumstances and travel wherever you desire. Below, you can read about my experience with the BMX 25, plus how this Igloo compares to YETI, RTIC, and ORCA—three of the biggest brands in the cooler space. In this review, you’ll see how the Igloo BMX 25 compares with the YETI Roadie 24, the RTIC 20 QT, and the ORCA 20 QT. While it’s more expensive than the Igloo BMX 25, I felt the additional cost was worthwhile, especially because the style is important to me. Despite its small and lightweight size, the BMX 25 cool box features Igloo Cool Riser technology and extra-thick walls with Igloo Ultratherm insulation, allowing for up to 4 days ice retention making the BMX 25 one of the best performing small Igloo cool boxes.
