About this deal

Felix's charmingly written voyage of self-discovery through cricket and music reminds us of the power in understanding the hands we are dealt, and how the journey itself is one to embrace. I love reading memoirs, listening to the Maccabees and watching cricket so I was hoping this book would satisfy all my cricket literature needs.

I was gifted this book as I have been a maccabees fan since the very beginning and I was very excited to read it. With unprecedented access to the artist’s entire archive, The Quentin Blake Book reveals the stories behind some of Blake’s most famous creations, while also providing readers with an intimate insight into the unceasing creativity of this remarkable artist.

Felix takes us through his life growing up in South West London and describes how his story is forever punctuated and given meaning by cricket. This had a very similar literary style to the Broken Greek by Pete Paphides although it is none the worse for that. Felix is an utterly compelling author and if like me, you bought this, for a laugh, then you are in for a treat… a book that unpacks the last two decades, the sporting landscape, grief and the human condition. What I was not prepared for was the beautiful writing in this very personal memoir in which Felix White explains the main influences in his life - personal, musical, and of course cricket. I laughed and cried and like Felix cricket has been a part of my life (for over fifty years) Cricket is so often a metaphor for life and can be a tremendous force for good (check out cricketwithoutboundarie.

It isn’t a sad book by any means though and I loved his tails of his early love of cricket and getting to love his guitar. So many of us want to be a rockstar, date a rockstar and have famous friends on their phone and Felix has had all that. It is quite simply the best music biography I’ve read since Cash by Johnny Cash and as a bonus it also contains allusions to Luis Boa Morte. Through his own exploits as a slow left arm spinner of 'lovely loopy stuff', to the tragic illness of his mother, life with The Maccabees and his cricket redemption, Felix touches on both the comedic and the tragic in equal measure. An unabashed love letter to the sport that has defined Felix White's life, It's Always Summer Somewhere articulates why cricket engenders such passion and devotion through his own moving and uplifting relationship with the game.Agree with Kelly Cates - this book is about the three most important things in life: love, music and sport (or more accurately cricket). Neither of his parents - from Lebanon and the Isle of Wight - were into the game, so it is a slight mystery to everyone that he took to it as much as he did. If you're aiming for an in-depth analysis of the inner workings of the higher echelons of English cricket, this might not be for you.

Not only is this book well written, poetic and captivating, with its threads running between subjects and moments in time that intertwine in a beautiful way, it is also deeply personal and heartfelt. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. In a fact-finding field trip in the name of catharsis, White hunts down the main players in said memory and hears about their own personal experience and recollections. His passion for the game is at the fore on the BBC ‘s number one cricket podcast and 5Live show, Tailenders, which he co-presents with Greg James and Jimmy Anderson. It’s a manifesto for anyone who has ever stood on the margins, and anyone who wants to make their mark on history.
