About this deal

This product has been thoroughly tested by our team of photographers and we are happy to give a 6 month warranty as a result. To be fair though, this is pretty typical of this type of lens, and one of the reasons true macro lenses aren't cheap.

While size and weight are some of the main advantages of the other DX AF-P lenses compared to their AF-S predecessors (in the case of the 10-20mm wide-angle and the 70-300mm telephoto zoom), there has been hardly any improvement in this kit lens compared to the older iteration of the 18-55mm AF-S VR II, which already came with the collapsible design (push button) known from some Nikon 1 lenses. With no switches on the lens barrel, you have no chance of accidentally changing settings when you want to take the shot. Aspherical lens elements correct these distortions by continuously changing the refractive index from the center of the lens. When the sun was in the frame, I could not get any nasty ghosting, flare, or any significant loss of the micro-contrast. Shots considered 'sharp' have no visible blur at the pixel level, and are therefore suitable for viewing or printing at the largest sizes, whereas files with 'mild blur' are only slightly soft, and perfectly usable for all but the most critical applications.

The most difficult thing for a zoom to do well is to be sharp at its tele setting wide-open, and here the 18-55mm AFP is wonderfully sharp. As a rule of thumb, you can use the following rule: the latest two generations of 18-55mm lenses that offer much better performance, have a button on the side of the lens barrel – this button is pushed to get the lens into the ready position. Chromatic aberration is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Unfortunately the 18-55mm VR handles these situations particularly badly, especially at the telephoto end where almost half the frame can become covered with multi-coloured blotches of flare. Like all lenses in the DX format, the 18-55mm casts a smaller image circle than lenses for full-frame 35mm cameras and is therefore only compatible with cameras having APS-C-sized sensors (or vignetting will happen).

CameraWorld is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, registration number 689327. Designed to enable more stable handheld shooting, Nikon's VR technology lets you shoot at up to four stops slower, without the image-degrading blur that can be caused by camera shake. On film, it will give black corners at focal lengths shorter than 24mm, but almost works OK at 24mm and longer on film as does the original 18-55mm II. By "sharp shots" I mean perfect tripod-equivalent sharpness when viewed at 100%, as shot on a D300 by me. This is achieved at a focus distance of about 25cm, giving a working distance of slightly over 11 cm between the front lens element and subject.I have also tested this lens on my older Nikon DSLR D7000 and D90 (featured by Nikon as an incompatible model), and it indeed does not work. If this crop is about 6" (15cm) wide on our screen, then the complete image printed at this same extreme magnification would be about 40 x 60" (1 x 1. As usual, chromatic aberrations are highest at the wideangle settings (18mm and 24mm), and become essentially negligible at telephoto. They are also sold as standalone products, and hence they are some of the most used lenses in the Nikon line-up.
