Bee seems nice, successful, and smart, but Nick is in such a slump of feeling sorry for himself and inertia, that about the only reason I cared about him was because he loves his dog, Rosie, and because he is pretty funny.
After all, the book opens with, “I turn I turn I turn before I lie to sleep and I rise before the Sun. It reminds me of Richard Linklater’s School of Rock (2003) in that it is a great work that can be enjoyed – the full spectrum of enjoyment!Self-esteem, work success, coercive relationships and friendships are all put under the microscope in this way, with characters sometimes given a second chance to get it right. Signaling a new level of sophistication for true connoisseurs, these unique books are works of art in their own right. Another bit of fun is the repeated presence of David Bowie references, including an album you have never heard of.
It is about love in all its mysterious and wonderful forms – the romantic (big tick), but also the love between friends, parents and children, cranky neighbours and animals… even love for a cause and ultimately, for ourselves. This book was funny, sad, and thought provoking, although I seemed to enjoy it the most when not thinking much at all. I was disappointed that the Berenstain folks did not have much of a role beyond essentially saying that others have experienced it, and then threatening the guy, Nick, from exchanging world-altering info with Bee.
