About this deal

Alessi's commitment to innovation can be seen in its ability to transform ordinary objects into extraordinary pieces of design. A truly iconic object and symbol, not only of Philippe Starck but of Alessi itself, this citrus squeezer - as revolutionary as it is surprisingly functional - was sketched in its essentials by Starck during a holiday by the sea in Italy, on a pizzeria napkin.

The Alessi Juicy Salif Citrus Squeezer, designed by Philippe Starck, is an icon of revolutionary kitchenware. Check out the Rewards icon in the bottom left of the screen to see the points you have earned with Aria.Starck vehemently believes this poetic and political duty, rebellious and benevolent, pragmatic and subversive, should be shared by everyone and he sums it up with the humour that has set him apart from the very beginning: "No one has to be a genius, but everyone has to participate.

An image of the Juicy Salif was featured on the front cover of Donald Norman's book Emotional Design.A design classic by Philippe Starck straight from the 90s - the landed spaceship; more a sculpture than a lemon juicer. Alberto Alessi was surprised and intrigued when he received the design for this lemon juicer from Philippe Starck.

An article in the Financial Times about bad design included the Juicy Salif among other examples, and proposed that the original "chamber of horrors" at the Victoria and Albert Museum be revived, to showcase modern examples. Starck became one of the most famous designers of that time and designed everything from apartment blocks, homes, domestic products and hotels.A citrus squeezer as revolutionary as it is surprisingly functional designed in simplistic form by Philippe Starck on a pizzeria napkin during a seaside holiday in Italy. The juice then flows down along the side edges of the tapered body and is finally concentrated by the pointed end straight into the drinking glass. Alessi's success lies in its ability to collaborate with some of the most talented designers from around the world. It is this ability to challenge norms and think outside the box that has made Alessi a trendsetter in the design industry. The pressed aluminium body of the juice squeezer breathes a 60s inspired stylized spacecraft design.

What was a spontaneous idea of the designer Philippe Starck on holiday turns out to be a surprisingly revolutionary and functional lemon squeezer - the Juicy Salif by Alessi.

Apparently, there is a famous puzzle in mathematics and physics courses that asks, "Why does a mirror reverse left and right, but not up and down? The designer sketched the basic idea for the press on a napkin, which Alessi finally put into practice in 1990. This distinctive elongated shape is inspired by the shape of a squid, which came to Starck when squeezing lemon juice over some calamari in a pizzeria whilst on holidays in Italy. I encountered said lemon squeezer on my very first day working with the collection and its design stuck with me, and I could not stop thinking about it.
