If you can ignore these nagging holes and economical characterization, then boy oh boy, what a thrilling read this is. He makes it clear very early on that his grandson should not go through the gate as it's dangerous, but in the end the grandson goes through anyway with no consequence.

The King Beyond the Gate is the second fantasy novel by Gemmell in his Drenai series, originally published in 1985 (a year after my birth, if that). Disfigured when fighting a "Joining" in the arena, he has lived the second half of his life in pain.
