If you start work part of the way into the year, a W1 or M1 code could see you overpay in tax – as it is spreading your Personal Allowance over too many months. The tax code list 2022 shows the each code beginning with a number and ending with a letter. Most people who only have one job or pension will currently get the 1257L tax code. The Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has today (Wednesday 22 November) announced a range of tax, benefits and savings measures. We round up the key announcements and what they mean for you.

We do not make, nor do we seek to make, any recommendations or personalised advice on financial products or services that are regulated by the FCA, as we’re not regulated or authorised by the FCA to advise you in this way. All your income from this job or pension is taxed at the basic rate in Scotland (usually used if you’ve got more than one job or pension) You can claim within four years of the end of the tax year in which you spent the money, but you have to keep records and receipts. The K Code: Used when deductions due for company benefits, state pension or tax owed from previous years are greater than your Personal Allowance. There are a number of UK tax codes, each of which mean something different. Here they are at a glance:Note: If you are on a K tax code your employer or your pension provider cannot take more than half your pre-tax wages or pension.

Tax Code NT: This is an abbreviation for ‘ no tax‘ due. It means you are not paying any tax on this particular form of income. All your income from this job or pension is taxed at the higher rate in Wales (usually used if you’ve got more than one job or pension)

List of Tax Codes and What They Mean

Your Personal Allowance has been used up, or you’ve started a new job and your employer does not have the details they need to give you a tax code However, there will also be either W1(for weekly pay) or M1(for monthly pay). This signifies that you are being taxed as if it is the first week or month of the financial year. A tax code shows the amount of tax-free income an employee should receive in a single tax year also known as their personal allowance. Anything earned above this amount is taxable. Who Receives a Tax Code? Once your new employee’s information has been sent to HMRC and processed by them, they may issue you with an updated tax code. This will be sent by post, can be viewed online if you use HMRC’s PAYE Online for employers service, or received electronically if you use payroll software. Will the tax code change?
