About this deal

If you’re interested in taking pictures and videos, though, the camera performs above average there. And if you’re trying to trade Battlefield 4 and Grand Theft Auto V for Running Fred and Bouncy Mouse, well, I’m sorry. Chromebooks need Haswell processors not for their power, but their longevity — I’m still crossing my fingers that HP’s Chromebook 14 lives up to its promised nine-plus hours of battery life.

I'm glad of the competition, but I don't see why WinRT's lack of legacy app support is a deal breaker that pushes you to another platform. Bass tones were richer with music and I didn’t need to turn the volume up as high to escape the far-away listening experience I noticed when I did not tune in with headphones. Most offer at least 8 hours to get you through the workday, but the HP Chromebook 11 goes beyond that. Type-A and headphone jack, while the other side boasts a full-sized HDMI port, microSD reader, and another USB 3. I think this is the more interesting product as it seems to have great battery life and solid performance.Using a Chromebook 11 next to a MacBook Air or even a Pixel is like using an Android phone from two years ago: it runs, but it’s lost a step or two.

Save for the shiny HP logo and Chrome logo on the lid, the laptop is predominantly a gunmetal grey slab when the lid is closed. For the more enterprising users, the Chromebook 11 can just as easily be rebooted into developer mode by hitting esc + switch (F5) + power, then hitting Ctrl + D when prompted/at every subsequent boot.

It’s a frustrating change from the smooth, responsive Chromebook Pixel, which got all this right — and had a touchscreen too, just in case. It’s sticky and plastic, and doesn’t allow your finger to glide smoothly at all; my fingers jittered around as I tried to move the cursor, and the screen jittered even worse as I tried to scroll with two fingers or pinch to zoom on the screen. Overall, the speakers are decent, but you’re better off using headphones for watching YouTube or to stream music. Granted, its display is iffy, it's lacking in storage, and can be a bit slow, but it’s still going to provide a gateway to the internet and all of the knowledge it contains, along with exceptional battery life.
