About this deal

One of the features of the WD My Passport Wireless SSD is ability to install cloud services from different providers to the WD My Cloud app. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. So, if you want it the WD My Passport Wireless SSD does give the ability to edit RAW files while travelling without the need for a laptop.

Adding a service will not make the WD My Passport Wireless SSD act as a client, so you will need to manually copy folder contents from your cloud provider to the device before you can access them in the field. There are three main ways to connect to the WD My Passport Wireless SSD: first, by wirelessly connecting your device direct to the drive’s own Wifi network, secondly, by connecting to the drive wirelessly via a shared access point (like a home or office access point), and third, by connecting a computer directly to the drive using a USB 3 cable.

Think Tank (and others) design many such packs engineered to fit under commercial airline seats, or easily in the overhead bins. Above: With its rubber bumper sleeve fitted, the My Passport Wireless SSD measures 135x135x30mm and weighs just under half a kilo, making it substantially larger than a basic portable drive whether using an SSD or an traditional hard disk. I would skip the 500 GB version as well (60 cents per GB) and would either get the 1 TB model (50 cents per GB) or the 2 TB model (40 cents per GB). They have unfortunately disabled it's ability, to be part of a cloud system following this generation of WD outdated security. Of course you could alternatively use a computer to browse, sort and edit the files whether on the road or back at base, and if you’re dealing with a lot of data you’ll almost certainly be connecting the drive over USB 3 to a computer at some point simply to get photos or videos off it in a timely fashion.Plex organizes your entire media collection through a simple interface and enhances it with descriptions, plot summaries, film posters and more. With the My Passport Wireless SSD connected to my home access point, I was able to connect to it using two laptops and an iPad over Wifi, as well as a Windows 10 PC connected to my home network with a cable. I’ve never really liked travelling with a laptop if I can avoid it as I just prefer not having to carry one with me or leave it in the hotel room or refuge, and I rarely want to do significant editing while I’m on the road. The drive comes in different sizes; 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB, and I went for the 500GB version as it’s very rare that I ever shoot anything like that amount of data when I’m travelling, even with the 4k video on my cameras and drone, and shooting full uncompressed RAW images. This made navigating through large folders of images so much easier, and the app overall felt more confident and responsive, generating thumbnails quickly and making it easy to save them onto the device for subsequent posting or sharing.

I benchmarked the WD My Passport Wireless SSD using CrystalDiskMark and it turned out that the advertised speed is in fact pretty darn accurate – I was able to reach around 387. I’m planning a trip very soon and I was wondering if this is the best travel backup solution you tried so far? On a Mac, you can access it via the Finder by opening the Network, after which it presents a standard folder labeled Storage; subsequently it simply appears as Storage in the main Finder view of your computer, allowing you to easily drag and drop files.

Once again I’d recommend selecting the option to copy new files only, otherwise your drive will fill up fast with duplicated content. Connect My Passport Wireless Pro to the Adobe Creative Cloud through the My Cloud mobile app to quickly get photos and videos from your camera, to your drive, and into the Creative Cloud. WD offers a wealth of portable drives, ideal for backing up your photos, videos and other precious data, but most are simple devices which require a host computer or laptop to provide power and data transfer over a cable.

If you remove a card that’s already been backed-up, add more photos or video to it then re-insert it, the drive will create a new folder labeled by the time of the new backup, within which again a folder is placed with the card ID and the contents. Use My Passport Wireless Pro as a Wi-Fi hub and share an Internet connection with up to eight (8) separate devices.

It is exciting to see manufacturers like Western Digital create efficient and portable backup solutions for photographers. Lastly, if I were to do this in the field without access to WiFi, trying to copy anything from the cloud would eat up quite a bit of data. WD’s SSD version is available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB or 2TB models, while the older hard drive-based version is available in 1 to 4TB models. Initially I was worried that the My Passport Wireless SSD was a solution for a problem that didn’t exist, but the more I used it, the more I found that it can actually complement what many of us do already.
