The end of 2020 might (finally) be upon us but Samsung’s never-ending launch strategy continues at pace. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE is, however, a bit different from the 11 Samsung smartphones we’ve reviewed previously. While I often struggled to make it through do with the S20 and S20 Plus, doing so with the S20 FE is easy and I can easily achieve more than six hours of screen on time – often more than an hour more. Externally, it looks the same as the regular S20 model - it has the same hole-punch camera in the middle of the display, the same rear-camera bump andeven a similar body. This brings the handset up to a whole new level of power, processing ability and camera performance. On top of that, the S21 features a similar price tag to what is available from the S20 FE. The ‘FE’ moniker here stands for ‘Fan Edition’ and it’s very much a cheaper, mid-year update for the brand’s flagship Galaxy S20 – with a bit of the Note 20’s DNA thrown in for good measure. It looks like it will continue to be sold alongside the Samsung Galaxy S21 in many regions.
In our battery rundown test, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE lasted for 20hrs 39mins before battery levels dropped to zero, which is 11% longer when compared against the Galaxy S20’s FHD+ score and a whopping 30% longer than the Note 20 Ultra. In the GFXBench Manhattan 3 offscreen test it was a dead heat between the S20 FE and S20, with the phones producing off-screen results of 129fps and 122fps, respectively. Review summary: The tester praises the phone’s fast screen refresh rate, excellent camera set and powerful processor. He is less impressed by the build quality and battery life. Thankfully, that’s the only major change when it comes to design and features. The phone also supports 15W wireless charging, is IP68 rated for dust and water ingress protection, has an in-display fingerprint sensor and comes in a wider range of colours: ‘Cloud Navy’, ‘Cloud Red’, ‘Cloud Lavender’, ‘Cloud Mint’, ‘Cloud White’ and ‘Cloud Orange’.
