Ideal for those that enjoy a sweeter style of rum, Matugga Golden Rum (42% ABV) and Matugga Spiced Rum (42% ABV) are currently available via Craft56. J. Gow Revenge rum J. Gow Rum takes its name from the infamous Orcadian pirate John Gow and the new rum, ‘Revenge’ is named after the ship that the pirate renamed after leading a mutiny on board, due to poor work conditions. This unaged rum is pot distilled from sugar cane molasses in Scotland by Dumfries-based Ninefold Distillery. Aged for up to 12 months in oak casks, the rum is spiced with a selection of fresh tropical fruit and exotic spices, including pineapple, orange, cacao and allspice. Rum can span the full spectrum of colours, from the light and mild white rums (which are perfect as a mojito base), through to aged golden rums that have developed a more complex taste.

Our panel – made up of 10-accredited spirits experts and rum-loving consumers – put 35 spiced rums to the test, spanning supermarket steals to big-brand bottles. Historically, adding spices and fruit to a blend of rums was used to mask undesirable qualities in the spirit. Today, however, spiced rums are proving very popular, thanks to the huge variation in flavours. Orkney distillery J. Gow Rum recently added a three-year-old cask aged pot still rum to its core range. We test our alcohol by drinking it, using a step-by-step process to select the very best. First, we try each spiced rum on its own, to assess the quality and flavour profile. We’re looking to see if the distiller’s description matches what we can taste, as well as making notes on any interesting flavours we find that aren’t mentioned on the bottle. Following the solo test, we partner each spiced rum with one of its most reliable mixers to see how it fairs in a long drink. Do any new flavours develop? Is the rum lost to the mixer or does it hold its own? The team say it is "deliciously smooth and creamy. Notes of vanilla, caramel, butterscotch and citrus, with a long and spicy finish."

The Matugga distillery was established in 2018 by husband and wife team Jacine and Paul Rutasikwa, who had been selling their range of rums since 2015. For beginners, this is a great rum to have with a nice cola and a slice of lime - it's refreshing and very moreish. Aberdeen-based Ardent Spirits, an independent bottling company, recently launched an exclusive ‘Sea Shanty rum’ with proceeds going to Aberdeen RNLI. The Scottish rum recipe is based on the Sea Shanty ‘wellermen’ song which talks about ‘sugar and tea and rum’. This botanical rum recently won a silver medal at the London Spirits Competition and is from Cabezon Beverage, a Scottish craft spirit company.Like Christmas cake in a bottle, it is made usingrumdistilled from freshly pressed sugar cane juice on the Island of Madeira. You’ll often find these styles are sweeter thanks to the addition of tropical fruit — banana, pineapple and orange — with plenty of spice coming from the likes of warming cinnamon and punchy ginger. Revenge’ has been distilled in Orkney and then aged in ex-bourbon and virgin oak casks for three years. Originally small batch distilled in England before moving production to Scotland, the rums draw inspiration from the couple’s Ugandan and Jamaican family heritage. The heartbreaking truth about many of the mainstream so-called 'rums' is that they are NOT EVEN RUMS. The producer's bottle below the minimum level of alcoholic strength that would designate them as a ‘rum’. Here in Europe, this is 37.5% ABV (EU LAW)and many rums are 35% or lower, sometimes much lower. Malibu is only 21% and many retailers list it as ‘rum’ when it is really on a ‘spirit drink made with rum’.
