About this deal

We reported this issue to the house-builders and initially I asked them that I wanted them to replace the lawn with new turf, but to be honest I am not sure whether this will help after reading this article & Q&A’s. The weather has now turned cold so I do not think the nematodes will be the right immediate treatment (and perhaps not successful anyway due to the sheer amount of crane flies we had over September). You should closely monitor soil temperatures and the presence of the adult Crane Flies (Daddy Long Legs) to time these applications.

For more information on how The Pallet Network delivers our different types of products, please watch this short video. What Issues Could Arise With Delivery? Adhering strictly to the application timings will ensure that any remaining colour in the bowl will be due to the inert carrier only and that you have performed an even application. While there aren’t any chemical solutions available (that don’t nuke everything in the garden), you can use nematodes and also introduce natural predators to your garden. The below infographic is designed to inform the user as to the life stage of the organism throughout the year. Other steps that I’ve found can help are; reduce your watering regimen during the autumn, mow the lawn frequently, dethatch and collect grass cuttings. First, I would find an area of the lawn that looks damaged, an unusual bare or brown patch, for example. Next, I would do a classic pull test; healthy grass will have strong roots and won’t be easy to pull up. I’ve found that diseased or damaged grass will have weak roots that give way easily.

Due to the fact that biological controls contain living organisms they have a short expiry date and should be refrigerated prior to use. Dobies strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3. PLEASE NOTE: Turf, Wildflower Turf, Sedum Mats and bulk Bag products are delivered on a pallet and can only be delivered to the kerbside. It is very important to irrigate immediately after application, water the grass well so the nematodes are washed below the thatch layer into the soil to reach the roots where the larvae will be feeding. The garlic spray method does seem to have a good effect at encouraging the grubs to leave the lawn. However, if there is a huge population or the grubs have nowhere to go, this method may only move them around!Garlic Spray: A bitter-tasting spray on the grass will discourage the grubs from eating the grass an they will wriggle away. Hopefully to be caught by birds or swept up off your patio. I have a professional organic garlic spray which I can apply to customers lawns, or you could try to make some yourself by soaking crushed cloves in boiling water overnight. The best form of protection is prevention. EU legislation has restricted the use of pesticides but you can employ organic solutions which don’t require a pesticide certificate. These are called ‘nematodes’, which are microscopic worms. They enter the grubs and infect them with a bacterial disease which kills them. Nematodes are available from various horticultural suppliers, but be warned; timing, soil moisture and the age of the larvae are all critical if the treatment is to be successful.

In spring, when the ground temperatures rise, they will reappear and start consuming the grass roots and some top growth. Damage From Larvae: The young crane fly larvae start to feed on the roots of grass, continuing throughout Winter and into Spring. minutes if treating a lawn. Applications to lawns require more water to wash the nematodes through the grass thatch. Environmentally friendly and safe for children, pets and wildlife. No need to exclude children and pets from treated areas.Getting them out of the lawn and a target for birds and other predators is a good thing though. I have added this to my treatment recommendations. Method 5 – Encourage insect-eating birds. With the feeder in an upright position, apply evenly to half of the area using a side-to-side motion. Application will take approximately 8 minutes under typical water pressure conditions.

Irrigate immediately after application using 2-5 mm water to help wash the nematodes into the soil. IMPORTANT: Make sure the lawn does not dry out after applying nematodes and keep it well watered for at least two weeks. Can you recommend what steps we should take now and over the next 6 months to avoid further damage and/or what we could ask our builders to do to support this (either replace the lawn now, or dig it up and replace in spring for example)? We are happy to completely remove the lawn if this is best as it is fairly small & the grass not great. Be vigilant all winter. Keeping an eye on your lawn through the dark winter months is important. A professional winter treatment will spot problems before they turn serious. You can then take steps to control their numbers. Continue to keep the lawn moist for up to 2 weeks after application. Repeat these instructions for an introduction of a second nematode sachet application 7 days after the first application. Repeat applications may be required for severe applications. Full instructions are provided on delivery. Can I Store Nematodes? The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry infective nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey. If applications is made at any time other than September or October, we would recommend applying a follow up application in September to ensure any newly hatched grubs are also eradicated. Key Points To make sure the nematodes are adequately watered in, treat the same area again for a further 8 minutes if treating a vegetable patch or 16 It is very important to irrigate immediately after application, water the grass well so the nematodes are washed below the thatch layer into the soil to reach the roots where the larvae will be feeding.
